REVISED AND UPDATED VERSION!
Ink and art are in Jaylene Charles' blood. When her overbearing father died unexpectedly, Jaylene quit her internship with a prominent Berkeley therapist and followed her heart to New Orleans. Finding kindred spirits there, she got back to her tattooing roots and realized her dream of owning her own tattoo shop. Jaylene had everything she thought she wanted when five tattooed, pierced, and broken-hearted rock n’ roll boys challenged her to put her skills, and her heart, to the test.
Maggie’s Bones were Metal’s next big thing when tragedy struck, leaving them devastated and at each others' throats. Their label demanded a follow-up to their latest insanely successful album, and they were running out of time. Hiding out in Louisiana to salvage their career, they sought Jaylene’s help. She immediately felt a connection with D, the broken man with the sorrowful eyes and missing smile, but refused to let him in.
Can Jaylene trust that D's feelings are more than gratitude? Can the man with the sad eyes make her accept that sometimes love really can cure the haunted?

I'd actually give this 3.5 starts I think, if I could. I'll start with the characters, which I loved. The boys in the band were charming, lovable, southern gents. The heroine, Jaylene, is pretty awesome too, not at all a "too stupid to live" character. So refreshing. Her best friend is a hoot and a big biker dude that's become sort of her surrogate father is awesome, his very annoying accent aside (personal quirk; I just hate reading accents. Like, when the words are spelled phonetically). He was sweet and protective and a cool character otherwise.******************SPOILER ALERT!!********************
So I loved most of the story. I'll repeat that most of that love hinges on really great characters that are detailed and you really get to know them (D's mom in wonderful too). The band is suffering from a loss and I think Jaylene helps them at a pace that's believable. So that's awesome, because that's the biggest part of the plot. Her and D fall in love too fast for me to totally believe it but I'm super used to that. It's still better than love at first site of love after a single day.
Why am I torn? The reasons are small to some but they matter to me, because I read A LOT, and I see this stuff so so so often. It just really grates after awhile:
1. The heroine is a virgin. Late-twenties virgin. Okay, fine. I can deal with that. BUT, please don't insult me by asking me to believe a college-educated (master's degree, no less) woman has never ever ever gotten herself off. That's right. Jaylene has never in 20-some-odd years ever had an orgasm. Sorry. Can't believe it. (I could just be my issue, but hey, it's my review, so...)
2. The heroine has issues with her father, and I'd expected that to be resolved in some form of BIG MOMENT, because she has trust issues because of it and, hello, you don't get a happy every after with trust issues. But I didn't expect what I got. A pretty big, overly dramatic scene at the end, which involved lots of anger from D. (Anger I found misplaced because she just went through a big traumatic event).
3. The exclamation points!!! She used them all!!! Every one in the land!!! Every!! Piece of!!! Dialogue!! Is!! Exclamation worthy!!!!!
4. The editing. This was the biggest problem. It's bad. Like, really bad. So bad I assume the book wasn't edited at all (even though she thanks an editor at the end of the book), so sadly I don't know if I'll read more from this author, no matter how much I loved her characters. I've seen a lot worse because I have dozens of self-published books and most are total nightmares. This book isn't but still, the book has wrong words, missing words, misspelled words, a couple names changed here and there, backward commas, etc. It's just a big ol' mess is the small ways, but for me, those really matter. They made the book a struggle to finish.
In the end I still congratulation the author for having the guts to publish, and for coming up with really great characters.

Haunted edition by RL Merrill Contemporary Romance eBooks Reviews
This book...soooo much that I loved...a few things that snagged me up.
My two favorite characters were Mackenzie and Darryl. I completely connected with their feistiness and loyalty. Loved the characters of Maggie's Bones, especially Devon. He was a very complex character and I really enjoyed seeing the different sides of him. The one character I just could not connect with was Jaylene. She was very passive aggressive and just drove me nuts. I couldn't really get a grasp on her. Some passages I felt like she was a 40- year old mom and then it would flip to a whiny, indecisive teen.
The information that was given pertaining to music, tattoo artists, and historical places was great ! The Author did a fantastic job of incorporating facts and her tastes. Painted a very clear picture.
The basis of the storyline, to me, was working through tragedies. Merrill had a plan in mind and she followed through. There was actually a lot of great advice in this story. It was a very emotional story and I appreciate those, but, for me, there was too much crying. It became too repetitive.
All in all, I really loved the book. It's a great read and I will be reading more from this Author.
Jaylene Charles is someone who has been born and raised around art and ink and tattoos. She lost her father and that bothered her. So as a coping mechanism she has a best friend who is a biker who kind of replaces the father figure in her life and he is very protective over her. So of course this leads to Daddy issues which in my opinion were not resolved well enough but in the end to do get some resolution. Suddenly the metal band name Maggie's Bones enters into her life. They have to get their album out soon but they are dealing with their own issues and they are having issues so they go to Jaylene for her help.
Of course Jaylene and D start to fall for each other but is it real? How can you trust the feelings of a man who may only be feeling happiness and gratitude towards you helping them. Are they real feelings or ones that will fade shortly? Things seem to happen way too fast.
The characters are well written but I did have a little bit of annoyance at how some of the writing and talking went. Also there are WAAAAY to many exclamation points, it drove me crazy. The big saving grace in this book is the characters. I found myself really enjoying them despite the other issues I did not like in the book. Each band member has his own story as well as personality and I love the fact that they are a bit nerdy as well. Devon was my favorite character and I did feel that Jaylene was a bit to sheltered for me (you will understand when you read the book). Also the book does seem to have some type of real world advice you can use.
